NIS launches enhanced passport tracker to address delays and improve visibility for applicants.
Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched an improved passport tracking system to address growing complaints over delays in passport issuance.
The update, shared on X on Thursday, introduces a new status: “PRODUCED (PASSPORT PRODUCED, READY FOR COLLECTION)”.This allows applicants to see clearly when their passports are ready for pickup or courier delivery, reducing uncertainty about processing timelines.
The rollout follows weeks of public criticism on social media over long delays, with some applicants reporting waits of several months. Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo, for instance, highlighted a six-month delay for his passport renewal despite completing payment and biometric registration in July 2025. The NIS confirmed his passport was produced and ready for delivery.

The update enhances the tracking system and helps applicants stay informed about timelines for passports produced and awaiting collection, the Service said, noting that delays can sometimes result from incomplete applications or technical issues.
Last year, the NIS increased passport fees to fund improvements. A 32-page passport now costs ₦100,000 for five years, up from ₦50,000, while a 64-page, 10-year passport costs ₦200,000.
The new tracking system is expected to improve transparency, reduce applicant frustration, and provide clearer visibility on passport processing and delivery.
