Super Eagles players react after Nigeria’s penalty shootout loss to Morocco in the AFCON 2025 semi-final in Rabat.
The Federal Government has commended the Super Eagles for their resilience, unity and fighting spirit at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite their narrow exit from the tournament.
Nigeria’s campaign ended on Wednesday after a tense semi-final encounter against host nation Morocco, with the Atlas Lions edging the Super Eagles 4–2 on penalties following a goalless draw at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, praised the national team for displaying discipline, courage and determination throughout the competition, noting that their performance reflected core Nigerian values.
According to the minister, the Super Eagles’ journey at the continental showpiece remained a source of national pride, irrespective of the outcome.
“Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork, and resilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent,” the statement read.
He acknowledged the emotional highs and lows associated with football, stressing that the team’s commitment and fighting spirit earned them the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad.
“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity, and never giving up. Hold your heads high, learn from this experience, and return stronger,” Idris added.
The minister further assured the players of the nation’s continued support, thanking them for the joy and hope they brought to Nigerians during the tournament.
During the decisive shootout, Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, saved efforts from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi, paving the way for Youssef En-Nesyri to score the winning kick and send the home fans into celebration.
Morocco will now face Senegal in Sunday’s final after the Teranga Lions secured a 1–0 victory over Egypt in the other semi-final, courtesy of a Sadio Mané strike.
