Federal Government has approved the release of more than 6 billion naira as intervention funds to 271 tertiary institutions across Nigeria for the 2026 cycle.
The funds, approved through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), will be shared among universities, polytechnics and colleges of education nationwide.
According to TETFund Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, 90.75 per cent of the allocation will go to direct disbursement, while 9.07 per cent is for designated projects and 0.18 per cent for stabilisation support.
Echono raised concerns over delays by some institutions in processing projects and poor use of the TETFund TERAS digital platform, warning that stricter monitoring will begin in 2026.

He said priority areas for 2026 include research and innovation, laboratory and agricultural development, ICT expansion, security infrastructure, and completion of abandoned projects.
TETFund will also introduce a new intervention line, the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN), to improve access to global academic resources and integrate research services.
Other planned interventions include new centres for robotics, coding, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity studies, and expanded commercial farm projects across selected institutions.
Echono urged beneficiary institutions to fully utilise their 2025 allocations ahead of the 2026 intervention rollout.
