Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti has criticized Wizkid’s fans for invoking the name of his late father, legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, in music discussions. Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Seun described the behavior as both disrespectful and ignorant, urging fans to focus on the music rather than fueling rivalries.
Keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. Why must you always bring Fela into your discussions?” Seun said. “You try to claim that your artiste is the new Fela. But when you realize the shoes are too big to fill, you turn around. If your lack of respect came from defiance, I could respect it. But it comes from ignorance. Complete ignorance.”
Seun Kuti criticized fans for provoking unnecessary conflicts in the music industry and questioned why comparisons overshadow the enjoyment of art.

You know why you cannot enjoy your artiste’s music without comparing it to something else? Because the music does not fulfill your spirits. That’s why you look for extra drama around the art,” he said, adding that meaningful music should inspire reflection and calm, not social media battles.
He also recalled past confrontations with Wizkid’s supporters and reiterated that his father’s legacy is non-negotiable. Seun emphasized that his family continues to honor Fela’s contributions through initiatives like Felabration, a festival celebrating Afrobeat and Nigerian culture.
Fela’s legacy deserves respect. It should not be dragged into fan wars or comparisons,” he concluded.
