Operatives of the FCT Police Command foiled a large-scale kidnapping attempt in Guto village, Bwari Area Council, early Thursday, but one officer lost his life in the fierce gun battle.
At about 1:10 a.m., the Command received a distress call that around 30 armed hoodlums had stormed the community intending to abduct a resident and his family.
The Bwari Divisional Surveillance Team, reinforced by the Inspector-General of Police Special Intervention Squad, responded immediately.
On sighting the police, the attackers opened fire, sparking an intense gunfight. Police overpowered the bandits, killing two, while the rest fled.
Tragically, one officer sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead at Bwari General Hospital.
FCT Police Commissioner, CP Miller Dantawaye, condoled with the fallen officer’s family and deployed additional personnel to the area.
He assured residents that normalcy has returned and vowed to track down the fleeing criminals.
CP Dantawaye commended the bravery of his men and reiterated the Command’s commitment to securing the FCT.
