Security tight at PDP headquarters as rival factions clash over party leadership
Heavy security operatives were deployed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national headquarters in Abuja on Monday as two rival factions prepared to hold separate meetings at the same venue, deepening the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.
The faction led by Samuel Anyanwu, who maintains he is still the party’s National Secretary until his tenure ends in December, arrived early at the Wadata Plaza headquarters and took possession of his office despite resistance from the opposing faction.
Speaking to reporters, Anyanwu confirmed that he requested the presence of security agencies, saying it was standard procedure for major party meetings.
He said the deployment was to “maintain law and order” and prevent disruptions, adding that the officers were also positioned to deal with any “intruders”—a remark seen as a reference to the Turaki-led faction, which had separately announced its intention to convene at the same location.
The parallel meetings planned by both groups have heightened tensions within the opposition party, raising concerns about further internal conflict as each faction insists on its legitimacy.
