Brigadier General Usman Sani supports Nigeria’s troop deployment to stabilize the Benin Republic after a failed coup.
The Federal Government has condemned the attack on Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, where armed men killed a vice-principal and abducted at least 25 students.
In a statement on Monday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, says security and intelligence agencies had been directed to locate and rescue the girls and ensure the attackers face justice.
Idris said the government “shares in the pain” of families affected by the incident and remains committed to securing the safe return of the students.
Sources told journalists that the vice-principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, was shot dead before the attackers seized several schoolgirls. The gunmen reportedly invaded the school on Sunday night, operating without resistance and plunging communities in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area into fear.
President Bola Tinubu, according to Idris, has reiterated that the protection of citizens particularly schoolchildren, remains a core responsibility of the State.
“The government condemns the reprehensible attack on innocent students and the killing of school officials who were carrying out their noble duty,” the statement read.
“Our security agencies have been issued clear directives to locate, rescue, and safely return the students. We will not relent until this is achieved.”
The government said efforts were underway to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security architecture, including improvements in military response, policing, and intelligence gathering.
Idris also noted that Nigeria is deepening security cooperation with ECOWAS, the African Union, and the Multinational Joint Task Force to curb cross-border criminal activities.
Residents told reporters that the attack caused widespread panic, leaving the region in mourning as communities await updates on the missing schoolgirls.
