The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has withdrawn his earlier decision to call witnesses in his ongoing trial on alleged terrorism charges.
At Monday’s resumed hearing before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, Kanu told the court that after reviewing the case file, he found “no valid charge” against him and therefore saw no need to present a defence.
“I have gone through the case file and realised there is no valid charge against me. Since I am convinced I have been subjected to an unlawful trial, there is no need for me to conduct any defence,” Kanu said in court.

Kanu had earlier informed the court of his intention to call witnesses and had applied for witness summons, following the court’s adjournment on October 24 for him to open his defence.
However, his new stance effectively shifts the focus of the case to legal arguments over the validity of the charges filed by the Federal Government.
Justice Omotosho directed Kanu to file a written address stating his position and serve the prosecution accordingly. The court subsequently adjourned the matter to November 4th, 5th, and 6th for the adoption of final written addresses, based on Kanu’s claim that the evidence presented and the charges so far have failed to establish any case against him.
