AAC leader Omoyele Sowore says the October 20 march to Aso Rock will be a peaceful protest demanding the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has announced October 20, 2025, as the date for a planned protest march to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja to demand the release of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Sowore, who made the announcement via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, described the planned protest as a “historic, peaceful, and lawful demonstration” aimed at drawing attention to Kanu’s continued detention.
“We now have a date for the historic #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest march to the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. It is October 20 at 7 a.m.,” Sowore wrote.

The activist also called on South-East governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to join the demonstration rather than issue empty statements of support.
“No more empty noise. Let @CCSoludo, @SenatorAbaribe, @alexottiofr, @PeterObi, and all others who claim to care step up and join us in person,” he said.
Sowore noted that he had reached out personally to several high-profile political figures, including Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo; Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti; Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe; and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, urging them to join the call for Kanu’s freedom.
“I have tried reaching out personally to Dr. Alex Otti, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, and Mr. Peter Obi (through his team). They promised to tell Mr. Obi about our plans, although he is currently travelling,” Sowore stated.

He added that Abia lawmakers had indicated plans to meet with the Attorney General of the Federation before taking part in further actions regarding Kanu’s detention.
Sowore, who has long been vocal about human rights and governance issues, emphasized that the movement transcends politics and is about justice.
“This is not the time for hesitation. If we genuinely believe that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu deserves freedom, then every leader of conscience must act — now, not later,” he said.
Kanu, the leader of the proscribed IPOB group, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest and repatriation to Nigeria in 2021. His prolonged detention has drawn calls from local and international groups demanding his release or fair trial.
