Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to implementing crucial electoral reforms as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 General Election.

The assurance came on Thursday during a meeting with the European Union Election Observation Follow-up Mission, led by Barry Andrews, Member of the European Parliament and Head of the EU Mission to Nigeria’s 2023 polls.
“INEC remains fully committed to addressing the recommendations from the 2023 EU Election Observation Mission report and ensuring a credible, transparent electoral process in 2027,” Professor Yakubu said.

The 2023 EU report contained 23 recommendations, eight of which were directly related to INEC. Professor Yakubu explained that administrative measures have already been implemented for areas within the Commission’s control, while ongoing consultations are being held with stakeholders to tackle cross-cutting issues.
“Matters requiring legislative intervention are currently pending the outcome of the ongoing electoral law review by the National Assembly,” he added.
The meeting underscores INEC’s proactive engagement with international partners and its determination to strengthen electoral integrity ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections.
