South African star Thuso Mbedu takes the lead in Task, a US crime drama already hailed as one of 2025’s best.
South African actress Thuso Mbedu has added another milestone to her growing international career with a leading role in Task, a new American crime drama series that is already drawing critical praise.

Mbedu, best known for her powerful performances in The Underground Railroad and The Woman King, stars as Sergeant Aleah Clinton, a sharp and resilient investigator in a covert task force led by actor Mark Ruffalo.
Speaking in a video shared on her page, the award-winning actress reflected on the challenges of adapting to her role, particularly with mastering an American accent. “Just coming into the American accent itself because I am originally from South Africa, there are certain things that my tongue doesn’t want to do, so just playing with that has been super interesting,” she said.
Since its premiere on September 7, Task has been hailed as one of 2025’s standout shows, earning a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 48 reviews. Critics have commended the series’ gripping storyline of crime, corruption, and betrayal, alongside Mbedu’s commanding performance.
Beyond her growing filmography, Mbedu’s career trajectory is being celebrated across Africa for showcasing the continent’s talent on the global stage. From an Emmy-nominated breakout performance to starring alongside Hollywood greats, she continues to inspire young African actors.
Task is expected to air later this year in South Africa on Showmax, giving local audiences the chance to see Mbedu in one of her most ambitious roles yet.
