A Federal High Court has ordered the Nigerian Medical Association to assess Nnamdi Kanu’s fitness to stand trial.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to constitute a panel of medical experts to evaluate the health condition of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a ruling on Thursday, the court ordered the NMA President to set up a team of between eight and ten members who will determine whether Kanu is fit to continue facing trial.
The decision follows growing concerns over Kanu’s health and repeated requests by his legal team for an independent medical assessment.
The court stressed that the evaluation must be carried out by a credible panel of professionals drawn from different medical fields to ensure fairness and accuracy.
The findings of the medical panel will guide the court in deciding whether proceedings against Kanu should continue or be suspended on health grounds.
Kanu is currently facing trial on charges bordering on terrorism and treasonable felony, which he denies. His detention and legal battles have been a source of political and public debate across Nigeria.
