The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a top official of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Samsideen Oladiti, popularly known as Shamelon, over allegations of murder and the brutal assault of a dispatch rider on Lagos Island.
In a statement released on Saturday via X (formerly Twitter), the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, said Oladiti, 55, was apprehended after being linked to two violent incidents—one resulting in death and another in grievous bodily harm.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, personally led a team of officers to Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, after a violent protest erupted over the alleged killing. Sympathisers of the deceased reportedly stormed Oladiti’s office, setting two of his motorcycles ablaze before police intervened.
Following news of the death, sympathisers of the deceased mobilised and staged a violent protest at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, setting two motorcycles belonging to the suspect ablaze and causing unrest in the area. The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Olohundare Jimoh, personally led police personnel to the scene. He swiftly restored calm, prevented further breakdown of law and order, and assured residents that the suspect is in custody and will be promptly prosecuted after investigations are concluded,” Oluseyi said.
The police confirmed that Oladiti has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, for discreet investigation.
Detailing the offences, Oluseyi explained that on September 17, 2025, at about 3:00 p.m., the suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, using a helmet and his fists to inflict serious injuries. The victim was rushed to the hospital, placed on oxygen, and is currently undergoing treatment.
A separate incident in August was also linked to the suspect. “On 18th September 2025, at about 11:00 a.m., another complaint was lodged against the same suspect in connection with an incident that occurred on 28th August 2025. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike a man on the head and face, inflicting severe injuries. Despite medical intervention, the victim was confirmed dead by a doctor on 17th September 2025. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy,” Oluseyi stated.
The Lagos State Police Command assured residents that justice would be served, stressing that the case is under active investigation.
