The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have threatened to shut down universities nationwide if the Federal Government fails to resolve long-standing grievances within seven days.
In a joint statement, the unions condemned what they described as the “unjust disbursement” of N50 billion earned allowances, alongside the non-payment of outstanding withheld salaries, and the delayed implementation of the 25/35 percent salary increment. They also demanded the renegotiation of the 2009 Federal Government–NASU/SSANU agreement.
The statement noted that a letter earlier sent to the Ministry of Education compelled the Minister to convene a meeting with the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU on July 4, 2025, to address the issues. However, the unions said government’s failure to take concrete action since then has left them with no choice but to escalate.
In light of the persistent unresolved issues, and the apparent lack of responsiveness from the Government to our legitimate concerns, we are compelled to serve a formal notice of seven (7) days effective from Monday, 15ᵗʰ September, 2025 to address our agitations, failing which members of NASU and SSANU would embark on a series of legitimate industrial actions including strikes to press home our demands,” the unions warned.
The ultimatum, they stressed, is their final attempt to push the government into action before resorting to disruptive measures that could paralyze academic and administrative activities across Nigerian universities.
