Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital faces possible power cuts as KEDCO demands full payment of outstanding bills.
The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has called on Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) to clear its electricity debt of N949.88 million as of August or risk disconnection from supply.
In a statement issued on Monday in Kano, the Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Sani Bala, revealed that the hospital must also settle its August bill of N108.95 million in full within ten working days to avoid further action.
He expressed concern over the mounting liabilities, noting that “no payment has been made for electricity consumed at the residential complex in spite of its negative impact on service delivery and KEDCO’s operations.”
Bala recalled that in a letter dated August 12, signed by the Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. Muhammad Aminu, KEDCO had already notified AKTH of its plans to withdraw power from staff quarters and non-essential areas due to partial settlement of bills.
While stressing the financial strain caused by the unpaid debt, Bala reassured the public that essential health facilities would not be affected.
Electricity supply to health facilities, especially those offering critical and life-saving services, will remain a top priority, he said.
KEDCO further emphasized its commitment to uninterrupted power for AKTH as a foremost health institution but urged the hospital management to cooperate in settling its obligations.
