Tobi Amusan wins silver in Tokyo as Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji claims historic 100m hurdles gold
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has secured a silver medal in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, finishing behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who delivered a stunning performance to claim gold in a national record.
Kambundji, 23, clocked 12.24s, eclipsing her previous best to win Switzerland’s first-ever world title in the event.
Amusan, the 2022 world champion and world record holder, followed closely with 12.29s, earning Nigeria’s 12th medal in World Championships history.
The bronze medal went to American Grace Stark in 12.34s, while compatriot Masai Russell placed fourth in 12.44s after recording the slowest reaction time in the field (0.240).

Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska equalled her season’s best of 12.49s for fifth, edging Bahamian Devynne Charlton who clocked the same time. Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, the 2023 world champion, finished seventh in 12.53s, and Nadine Visser of the Netherlands placed eighth in 12.56s.
Amusan, 28, had earlier impressed in the semi-finals, winning her race in 12.36s ahead of Visser and Skrzyszowska to fuel hopes of retaining her crown. However, in the final, despite a strong start, she could not match Kambundji’s late surge.
The silver adds to Amusan’s illustrious record, which includes her historic 2022 gold in Eugene, where she set the world record of 12.12s.
