FCCPC seals Ikeja Electric offices for failing to meet consumer rights obligations.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), says Nigerian consumers recovered over N10 billion between March and August 2025, with banking and fintech services topping the list of complaints.
Updated data released by the Commission on Thursday shows that banking services accounted for 3,173 complaints, followed by fintech with 1,442 cases. Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) ranked third with 1,543, while electricity services recorded 458 cases.
Other sectors where grievances were lodged include e-commerce (412), telecommunications (409), retail and shopping (329), aviation (243), IT (131), and logistics (114).
In total, the FCCPC resolved 9,091 complaints during the six-month period, covering issues such as unfair charges, product defects, service failures, deceptive marketing, and poor redress mechanisms.
Reacting to the data, FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Tunji Bello, said the figures reflect the struggles of everyday Nigerians.
“These numbers are not just statistics; they tell the story of consumer frustration. The FCCPC is determined to hold businesses accountable and ensure fair market practices that protect the welfare of all consumers,” he stated.
The Commission noted that while banking and fintech disputes dominate in financial impact, electricity complaints remain a source of widespread dissatisfaction, especially with billing disputes and service failures.
It also flagged e-commerce disputes as a growing pain point, often involving refunds, deliveries, and counterfeit goods. Similarly, digital lending and investment scheme disputes are on the rise, aligning with the FCCPC’s recent rollout of regulations to curb abusive practices in the sector.
The FCCPC urged businesses to strengthen their internal complaint-handling systems and pledged deeper collaboration with regulators such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Consumers were encouraged to continue reporting violations via the FCCPC complaint portal (complaints.fccpc.gov.ng) or at its zonal and state offices.
