Simon Ekpa jailed in Finland: Court convicts Nigerian-born politician over terrorism and separatist activities tied to Biafra agitation
The Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland has sentenced Nigerian-born Finnish politician, Simon Ekpa, to six years in prison for terrorism-related offences.
Ekpa, 40, a former councillor in Lahti, was convicted of aiding a terrorist organisation, incitement to terrorism, aggravated tax fraud, and breaching Finland’s Lawyers Act.
The court ruled that between 2021 and 2024, Ekpa exploited social media influence to strengthen the Biafran separatist movement, founding armed groups classified as terrorist organisations and urging followers to commit crimes in Nigeria.
Although he denied all charges, the judges found him guilty after a month-long trial. He will remain in custody.
Ekpa, arrested in December 2024, rose to prominence for his online broadcasts advocating Biafra’s independence, drawing global controversy.
