The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has apologized to Nigerian Television Authority journalist, Ladi Bala, for verbally assaulting her while she covered last week’s Abuja–Kaduna train derailment.
Speaking during a news conference at the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat in Abuja, Dr. Opeifa admitted his remarks were made under pressure and took full responsibility.
He described the incident as regrettable and named Ladi Bala an Ambassador for Media Advocacy in recognition of her professionalism.
He also announced plans to set up a Customer Service and Relations Department to improve passenger engagement and media relations.
NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike, welcomed the apology but warned that the union will continue to resist any form of harassment against journalists.
Senior Special Assistant to the President, Tunde Rahman, commended Opeifa’s humility and pledged continued collaboration between the NRC, the presidency, and the media.
