
Winning starts for Bayelsa United and Bayelsa Queens! NPFL and WAFU B action delivered drama, goals, and strong away performances
Bayelsa United began their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign on a bright note with a hard-fought 1-0 away victory over Shooting Stars in Ibadan, courtesy of Kehinde Lawal’s 30th-minute strike.
Warri Wolves also grabbed maximum points on the road, edging Katsina United 1-0 through a late goal by Igbunnu Evwierhurhoma.
Elsewhere, record champions Enyimba were held to a goalless draw by newcomers Barau FC in Kano, while Kun Khalifat frustrated Rangers International with another 0-0 stalemate.

In Maiduguri, El-Kanemi Warriors impressed their home fans with a 2-0 win over Bendel Insurance, thanks to goals from Al’amin Umar and Daddy Abdulrahman. Abia Warriors also secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Kano Pillars in Umuahia, with Paul Samson finding the net. Meanwhile, Kwara United and Ikorodu City played out a goalless draw in Ilorin.
On the women’s front, Bayelsa Queens opened their WAFU B Champions League qualifying campaign with a 2-1 triumph over Ghana’s Police FC. Shakirat Moshood gave the Nigerian champions the lead in the 12th minute, before Emem Essien doubled the advantage in the 62nd.
Mary Barkelo pulled one back for Police FC, but the Queens held on to seal an important win in their opening group game.
