Players and officials of Bayelsa Queens Football Club have received millions of naira in rewards after emerging champions of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL).
Governor Douye Diri announced a N4 million cash reward for each player and the team’s head coach, Ogbonda Whyte, while eight other coaches will receive N2 million each.
Diri made the pronouncement during the presentation of the NWFL trophy to him at the 167th State Executive Council meeting in Yenagoa.
The state government’s corporate partner, Premium Trust Bank, also announced an additional N2 million for each player and technical crew member, boosting the team’s earnings significantly.
Other beneficiaries include the club chairman (N3 million), six board members (N1 million each), backroom staff (N1.5 million each), and the supporters’ club (N3 million).
Governor Diri praised the team for completing an unbeaten season and winning the league for the second time in three years.
“In 2022, you went for the WAFU B Champions League qualifier and won it for Nigeria. Now you are going again to represent not only Bayelsa but also Nigeria. You must display the indomitable Bayelsa spirit and return with the trophy,” Diri said.
Bayelsa Queens will represent Nigeria at the WAFU B regional qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire ahead of the CAF Women’s Champions League in Morocco.
Premium Trust Bank’s Chief Business Officer, Offiong Aniebet, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to sports development in Bayelsa, while Sports Commissioner Daniel Igali described the club as “defining champions,” recalling their 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League bronze medal triumph.
