
A celebration of African strength, unity, and youth excellence” — LOC Chairman as Abuja hosts 14th African Armwrestling Championship.
The city of Abuja is now officially the heartbeat of African sports, as all 20 participating countries for the 14th African Armwrestling Championship have successfully arrived in Nigeria, setting the stage for what promises to be a historic and high-energy showdown from July 23 to 27 at the M.K.O. Abiola National Stadium.
Today marks the official Day 1 activities, featuring athlete seminars, technical training sessions, and weigh-ins. The atmosphere is electric, with over 400 athletes and officials from across the continent now in Abuja, preparing to battle for continental glory and crucial qualification spots.
The championship, hosted by the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAWF) in collaboration with the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), serves as a qualifier for the 2025 World Armwrestling Championship in Bulgaria and a key benchmark for the 2027 All-African Games in Egypt.
To set the tone for the event, a high-level media briefing will be held later today featuring:
- Hon. Adeboye Adeyinka, Chairman, Local Organizing Committee (LOC)
- Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President, Armwrestling Federation of Africa
- Engr. Samuel Jackson, President, Nigeria Armwrestling Federation
- Mr. Mircea Simionescu-Simicel, Secretary General, World Armwrestling Federation (Romania)
- Officials from the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC)
The briefing will highlight Nigeria’s readiness, the significance of the championship, and the impact of armwrestling on grassroots and continental sports development.
Participating nations include: Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Senegal, Mali, Egypt, Cameroon, Togo, Niger, Ivory Coast, Benin, Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda, Madagascar, Gabon, Mauritius, Sierra Leone, Congo Brazzaville, Central African Republic, and Eswatini.
According to LOC Chairman Hon. Adeboye Adeyinka, “This event is not just a tournament — it’s a celebration of African strength, unity, and youth excellence. With every athlete and official now on Nigerian soil, we are more than ready to make history.”
The championship officially kicks off on Wednesday, July 23rd, 2025.
