Benjamin Jeremiah and Yahaya Sani-Inabo celebrate a straight-sets win to reach the men’s doubles quarterfinals at the VEMP National Open Tennis Championship in Abuja.
Benjamin Jeremiah and Yahaya Sani-Inabo are through to the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles event at the ongoing VEMP National Open Tennis Championship in Abuja, after pulling off a determined 6-4, 7-6(5) victory over John David and Godgift Timibra.
Playing on Court 4 of the National Tennis Centre at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, the duo showed composure and grit in a tightly contested round of 16 match.
The opening set saw both sides locked at 2-2 before Jeremiah and Sani-Inabo seized a critical break to edge it 6-4. The second set was even more fiercely fought, going into a tiebreak, which the pair clinched 7-6(5) to seal the match in straight sets.
Reacting after the win, Jeremiah said:
“The game went well, and we’re really happy with the result. This is my first appearance in this particular doubles event, though I’ve played in senior competitions before. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go far in singles, as I lost in the qualifiers.”
His partner, Sani-Inabo, credited focus and perseverance for their success:
“It was a tough match, and I thank God for the win. We stayed focused and got the job done. I’m taking it one match at a time and looking forward to my next singles match against Endurance Ehiegiamusoe. Hopefully, I can keep the momentum going.”
The pair now face a daunting quarterfinal test against Daniel Adeleye and Abubakar Yusuf, who cruised past Endurance Ehiegiamusoe and Saidu Sani-Inabo 6-1, 6-2 in their own round of 16 clash.
