The Nigerian Army says several high-profile terrorist leaders have been killed in Zamfara State following a series of coordinated operations by troops of the 1 Brigade.
In a statement on Friday, Army spokesperson Captain Sulaiman Omale said troops from Combat Team 6 encountered armed fighters in Mai Kwanugga village, Talata Mafara Local Government Area, where the attackers had been burning homes and terrorising residents.
The army said five notorious bandit leaders—identified as Auta Jijji, Dankali, Sagidi, Kachallah Rijaji, and Kachallah Suza—were among those neutralised during the raid.
Troops also recovered weapons, including four AK-47 rifles, one PKT machine gun, two RPG tubes, six RPG bombs, and over 70 rounds of assorted ammunition.
Two civilians were caught in the crossfire, the army confirmed, adding that clearance operations were ongoing to eliminate remaining threats.
In a separate incident, troops responded to a protest in Dayau village, Kaura Namoda LGA, where residents had blocked a major road over recent bandit attacks. The army said the protest was dispersed peacefully, and traffic was restored.
Brigadier General Timothy Opurum, Commander of 1 Brigade, praised the troops for their “gallantry” and urged residents to support security efforts by sharing credible intelligence rather than resorting to vigilantism.
