The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Zamfara State have given the state government a 14-day ultimatum to resolve irregularities in the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage.
The ultimatum was announced during a press conference in Gusau following an emergency meeting of the labour unions.
Zamfara State NLC Chairman, Mallam Sani Halliru, condemned the discrepancies in the payment of March salaries, calling them “unfortunate and deeply concerning” for government workers.
He revealed that some employees received salary increases as low as N3,000 to N7,000, while others were unlawfully removed from the payroll, contrary to the government’s earlier assurances.
He criticized the state government for breaching workers’ trust, noting that a committee had been set up to ensure smooth implementation of the new wage.
He warned that failure to address these issues within two weeks would lead to decisive action by the unions.
TUC Chairman Sa’idu Mudi also expressed frustration, stating that Zamfara remains the only state yet to fully implement the N70,000 minimum wage. He accused certain government officials of deliberately sabotaging the process and urged Governor Dauda Lawal to investigate and take necessary action.
