The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a warrant of arrest for the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), after he failed to appear before lawmakers.
The decision was made during Monday’s plenary after Enebeli ignored a 72-hour ultimatum set by the Assembly. Lawmakers had initially given a 48-hour deadline, later extending it to 72 hours, to allow the RSIEC chairman and other commissioners to explain the circumstances surrounding the nullification of the October 2024 local government elections.
Despite the summons, Enebeli and his commissioners did not appear before the House. Instead, they have filed a lawsuit at the State High Court, challenging the Assembly’s resolutions.
The legal standoff now raises further tensions over the controversial election and the Assembly’s oversight role in the matter.
