Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed reports suggesting he is planning to leave the party, calling them false and baseless.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Atiku’s media office refuted the speculation, emphasizing that he remains a principal and bona fide member of the PDP.
Not Abandoning PDP
Addressing recent rumors, Atiku clarified that his political focus is on building a strong coalition of opposition parties, including the PDP, ahead of the 2027 general election. His goal, he stated, is to unite forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which he described as incompetent and responsible for the hardships facing Nigerians.
“We wish to clarify that the so-called news of Atiku defecting to another party is a total fallacy that holds no merit in logic,” the statement read.
Atiku reaffirmed his dedication to leading a grand opposition alliance to challenge the APC, asserting that claims of his exit from the PDP run counter to his political strategy.
Nigeria ahead of the 2027
The statement further noted:
“Atiku Abubakar has persistently called for a coalition of opposition political parties in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election with the aim of ousting the incompetent and pain-inflicting APC, in order to give Nigerians a new lease of life.”
It dismissed allegations of his defection as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public, reiterating that Atiku remains a key stakeholder in PDP’s political structure.
With the 2027 elections still on the horizon, Atiku appears focused on consolidating opposition forces rather than switching party allegiance—a move that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape in the coming years.
