As the world marks International Women’s Day, the ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association (ECOFEPA) is amplifying calls for increased female representation in governance across West Africa.
They stressed that gender inclusivity is crucial for regional progress.
Speaking at the close of the ECOWAS Parliament’s extraordinary session in Lagos, ECOFEPA President Veronica Sesay urged West African nations to adopt policies that ensure greater female participation in leadership.
She pointed to Sierra Leone’s success, where a legal mandate has secured 30% female representation in elective positions.
In a move to strengthen its influence, ECOFEPA approved a new constitution to enhance funding and unveiled its 2025 Action Plan, with a strong focus on youth and women’s empowerment.
The association pledged to intensify efforts throughout the year, pushing for policies that break barriers and foster political inclusion for women.
With renewed momentum, ECOFEPA says the time for action is now, as West Africa works toward a more inclusive and equitable future.
