The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has extended the deadline for submitting memoranda on the creation of additional states and local governments in Nigeria.
The new deadline is now March 26, 2025, instead of the previously announced March 5, 2025.
A circular signed by the Deputy Speaker and Committee Chairman, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, stated that the extension follows public requests for more time.
He reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to supporting legitimate proposals that align with constitutional provisions.
The Committee also reminded proponents that all submissions must adhere to Section 8(1) of the Nigerian Constitution.
This section mandates that any request for a new state must be backed by at least a two-thirds majority of representatives from the affected area across the National Assembly, the State House of Assembly, and Local Government Councils.
Similarly, requests for the creation of additional Local Government Areas must comply with the same constitutional requirements.
Submissions should be made in triplicate to the Committee Secretariat at the White House, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
For further inquiries, stakeholders are advised to contact the Clerk of the Committee, Wali Shehu. The Committee emphasised that only proposals meeting the stipulated guidelines will be considered.
