Amid reports of violence, controversies, and ongoing legal disputes, Osun State still holds local government elections on February 22, 2025.
This was even as the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, called for a suspension of the polls.
The decision follows a directive from the Osun State High Court in Osogbo, which instructed the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) to proceed with the elections as planned.
While Governor Ademola Adeleke recently cast his vote in Ede North Local Government Area and described the process as peaceful, critics argue that his optimistic remarks do not fully address the underlying challenges reported in several wards.
The election, spanning 30 local government areas and 323 wards, is being hailed by some as a crucial opportunity for grassroots development.
However, the persistent concerns, ranging from security lapses to unresolved legal issues, continue to spark debate among stakeholders.
Opponents contend that the decision to push forward, despite significant calls for postponement, may compromise the credibility of the electoral process if the reported incidents of violence are not adequately managed.
As both supporters and critics await further developments, there is a strong call for all parties to respect the court’s ruling while ensuring robust measures are in place to safeguard a fair and peaceful election day.
