
Renowned nationalist and Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96. He died peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos, on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025.
His family confirmed the news in a statement expressing gratitude for his selfless service to God, the nation, and humanity. He is survived by his wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, 94, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A condolence register has been opened at his Lagos residence (8, Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1) and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.
Born on April 10, 1928, in Isanya Ogbo near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Chief Adebanjo was a lawyer, journalist, and political activist. He began his career as a journalist before studying law in the United Kingdom, where he was called to the English Bar in 1960.
His political journey started in 1943 as a Zikist, supporting Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. However, in 1951, he joined the Action Group’s youth wing and became a close political disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, shaping Nigeria’s political landscape for decades.
