
Isaiah Okonofua and Faeren Kuma emerged victorious in the men’s and ladies’ singles match play finals at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai (TYB) International Golf Resort and Country Club, Abuja.
The tournament, which began in 2024, saw the finalists compete through seven intense stages before reaching the grand finale. Okonofua, playing off handicap 10, secured a hard-fought victory over AVM Ladan (handicap 18) on the final hole.
Reflecting on his comeback win, he said, “I was four down at hole 7 but fought back doggedly to claim victory at hole 18.”In the ladies’ category, Kuma (handicap 35) edged out Sarah Kudi (handicap 25) by two holes with one to play.
Despite early dominance, Kuma admitted to struggling with nerves but regained composure just in time to secure the win.
The TYB match play event also featured a men’s doubles category, where Philip Kum and Sam Anyande triumphed over Chile Ushahonba and Stephen Godwin.
Other winners included Longdi Paul (best gross ladies), Becky Danladi (best net prize), Lyon Iyke (longest drive men), Yemi Sola (longest drive ladies), and Timothy Mike (nearest to the pin men).
Vice Captain Ali Peters expressed excitement for the new golfing year, announcing ongoing upgrades, including a world-class practice range and improved course irrigation. “We’re committed to enhancing our facilities and hosting top-tier tournaments this year,” he stated.
Lady Captain Maureen Apute also shared high expectations for the ladies’ division, promising a lineup of thrilling events. “We welcome everyone back to our lush greens and look forward to an exciting golfing season,” she said.
