Motorists plying the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Makurdi Expressway are facing long delays at the newly inaugurated Garaku Toll Plaza.
Reports indicate that congestion is worsening due to limited operational lanes and the exclusive use of ATM cards for toll payments.
The Federal Government commenced tolling operations at the Garaku Plaza on February 4, 2025, as part of efforts to generate revenue for road maintenance and repay a $460.8 million loan from the China Exim Bank.
However, drivers are raising concerns over traffic congestion, with reports suggesting that only one lane is currently operational.
Toll rates
The toll rates range from ₦500 for saloon cars to ₦1,600 for multi-axle vehicles, with discounts for frequent users and exemptions for certain categories.
The government has also implemented a cashless payment system, using Point of Sale devices and electronic transactions.
Cashless system
Despite these measures, many motorists said they were not adequately informed about the cashless system and are calling for increased public awareness and additional lanes to ease traffic.
Authorities have been urged to expand operations and introduce alternative payment methods to ensure smoother toll processing and reduce delays.
For now, drivers using the Garaku Toll Plaza may need to exercise patience as the government works to improve the system.
