President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged his administration’s commitment to fostering peace, justice, and sustainable development in Ogoniland.
Speaking during a meeting with Ogoni leaders at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the need for reconciliation and unity, urging the Ogoni people to set aside past grievances for the sake of progress.
“We cannot rewrite history, but we can correct the anomalies of the past going forward. Healing wounds is impossible if we continue to be angry,” the President said.
To drive this initiative, he directed the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to coordinate negotiations and ensure inclusive consultation.
Tinubu also called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Rivers State Government, and federal ministers to collaborate with Ribadu’s office.
Highlighting his long-standing connection with the Ogoni cause, the President assured the delegation of his commitment to honoring the sacrifices of those who fought for justice.
“We must work together with mutual trust. Go back, consult further, and bring others along. Together, we can restore peace, development, and a clean environment to Ogoniland,” Tinubu urged.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State commended the President’s support and emphasized the importance of resuming oil operations in Ogoniland.
He assured Tinubu of the delegation’s readiness to follow his directives. The meeting, which included a 50-member delegation representing diverse Ogoni constituencies, was described as a step toward resolving lingering issues in the region.
King Festus Babari Bagia Gberesaako XIII, the Gberemene of Gokana Kingdom, reiterated the leaders’ willingness to engage constructively for lasting solutions.
Mallam Ribadu lauded the Ogoni people for embracing dialogue, aligning with Tinubu’s vision of inclusivity, and prioritizing peace and sustainable development.
